At least 20 people have been killed in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Hawan Kibo–Jos route in Plateau State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
The crash occurred at about 3:32pm on Friday, October 2, after Sopp Water Falls, according to FRSC Corps Public Education Officer Osondu Ohaeri.
FRSC said 25 people were involved in the crash, comprising 23 males and two females. Five people sustained injuries, while the 20 fatalities were all male.
Four vehicles were involved: a Howo Sino truck, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Hummer bus operated by Yankari Express and a motorcycle.
FRSC said the injured victims were evacuated to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital, while the bodies of those who died were deposited at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) mortuary.
The agency identified brake failure and loss of control as suspected causes of the crash and said its rescue personnel had cleared the obstruction and restored traffic on the affected section.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has directed the crash investigation team to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He also urged motorists, particularly commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, to prioritise vehicle maintenance, roadworthiness and responsible driving.
The crash has once again raised concerns over safety along the Hawan Kibo route, where steep bends and descending sections require careful driving.
