The Zamfara State House of Assembly has denied reports that a rival leadership has emerged within its ranks, saying there is only one lawful body carrying out legislative duties in the state.
The clarification came after ten suspended lawmakers were said to have held a separate sitting, claiming to form a new leadership.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, addressed the situation while speaking to journalists at the Assembly Complex in Gusau.
He stated that any valid legislative activity must take place within the Assembly’s official building and that no other location can be used for such purposes.
The development follows recent reports shared on social media that a group of lawmakers had convened outside the usual venue to hold a parallel session.
Moriki dismissed this as a false narrative, stating that the Assembly has not split and continues to function as a single, recognized institution.
He described the actions of the suspended members as unlawful, pointing out that their meeting has no basis in law.
According to him, one of the individuals involved had already lost his seat in the Assembly and was no longer recognized as a member.
He also noted that there is an ongoing legal case concerning this issue, which prevents him from discussing it in detail.
Moriki added that a court had asked both the affected person and the Assembly to keep things as they are until a final decision is made.
Because of this, he said, no one involved in the case should act in a way that disrupts the current structure of the Assembly.
The Assembly maintained that it is the only recognized legislative body in the state and that all sittings must follow due process within its designated chambers in Gusau.
