The Yobe State government, on Tuesday, announced a donation of N30 million to support the families affected by the recent insurgent attack in Mafa, Tarmuwa Local Government Area. The attack, attributed to suspected Boko Haram insurgents, occurred on Sunday and resulted in the deaths of 34 residents while also destroying shops and homes in the village.
Deputy Governor Idi Gubana made the announcement during a visit to Babangida, the Tarmuwa headquarters, where he attended the funeral of the victims.
He extended his condolences to the Emir of Jajere, Mai Buba Mashio, and the local community.
Gubana instructed the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, to provide immediate relief, including shelter and food, to those displaced by the attack.
He also revealed that Governor Mai Mala Buni had met with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, to discuss enhanced security measures for Mafa.
Gubana emphasized the need for increased military presence in Mafa, which lies on the border of Borno and Yobe, to deter future attacks. Meanwhile, Retired Brig.-Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam, Special Adviser on Security Matters to Governor Buni, refuted claims that the number of casualties exceeded 34.
”The figure is 34 people that were found dead, while five persons sustained injuries. Four are in critical condition, while the other sustained a minor injury and is in stable condition.
”Any information apart from this is just a rumour. Nobody has gone to Mafa yesterday other than the troops who brought these bodies.
” The insurgents are not confronting the military; they are confronting innocent civilians who are soft targets,” he said.
