Twenty people have lost their lives due to devastating floods that have swept through Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State since early August, according to the council’s Chairman, Alhaji Babagana Ibrahim.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Gashua, Ibrahim revealed that many of the victims were trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed mud houses.
He reported that the flood destroyed over 10,000 homes and farmlands across 200 communities. The worst-affected villages include Misilli, Lawan Musa, Dagona, Dala, Katuzu, and Sabongarin Gashua.
Ibrahim also mentioned that 2,000 displaced persons are currently seeking refuge in three camps located in Gashua: Goodluck, Zango 2, and Babuje.
Despite limited resources, the council has been providing food for those in the camps. Ibrahim noted that former Senate President, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, recently donated N10 million to support the victims, and the state government has begun distributing non-food items to those affected.
He called on the federal government to assist the growing number of flood victims, whose numbers are increasing daily.
“The magnitude of this disaster is so enormous, and Bade has no capacity to manage it.
“That is why I am appealing to the federal government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to come to our aid as the number of displaced persons continues to rise,” he said.
