The internet fraudsters popularly known as yahoo boys are using a variety of cyber fraud methods in an attempt to defraud people.

These methods include online dating which involves sending fraudulent messages to online dating websites and social network sites.

Another scam popular with the yahoo boys is ’phishing’, a technique being used to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details.

The “yahoo boys” are also big on ATM fraud. They may stand at ATM galleries to feign assistance to vulnerable users – illiterates, the old and the physically challenged – and later swap cards to defraud them.

Starnews reports that the most recent method been used by these miscreants is the latest act of sending customised TraderMoni SMS to Nigerians on behalf of the federal government in an attempt to defraud their target.

Starnews correspondent who received such messages yesterday said the text is of two-fold.

Starnews gathered that the first fraudulent text message is to convey the federal government’s alleged approval of the supposed tradermoni scheme to their target on the first day.

The format of the first message as sent to one of our correspondents by text reads: ”Congrats  ! Federal Government approved your N10,100 TraderMoni BOI/GEEP. You can cash out from RDC Agents and any GTB, First Bank, Stanbic IBTC and Zenith. ATM Machines. No PVC required. To accept Dial *540*265*2#. TraderMoni is free.”

This message alone would probably make their vulnerable victims excited especially since there’s no submission of personal information. The yahoo boys being able to understand the psychology of most vulnerable Nigerians, but know that the supposed victim would want to rush to a close-by ATM stand.

Starnews gathered that at this point, after creating a good impression, they would wait till the following morning by sending another message with this format titled ’trader-moni cash out’ which reads:

”For your TraderMoni Cashout.

Follow: Visit Any ATM Machine that supports Quickteller.

Insert your card and Type your pin.

Select Quickteller.

Select pay bills.

Select your account type.

Select others.

Enter 422222 as the Payne code.

Enter customer/Agent Ref NO: which is (08119504158) and press PROCEED.

It will authenticate and request for the amount code which is 10100. and PROCEED.

Enter your phone number and press PROCEED and PAY. Your transaction will be processed successfully.”

Taking the following steps above would not only give them access to a victim money immediately but will also enable the scamsters to gain more access into the victim’s account .

It’s expected we all look before we leap so as not to fall into their hanky-panky schemes, Starnews reports
