A 32-year-old trader and mother of three, Oluwatoyin Ibikunle, has approached the Akure Customary Court, seeking to end her 15-year marriage to Ayodeji Ibikunle, a 40-year-old vulcanizer. Oluwatoyin cited repeated physical abuse and neglect as her reasons for wanting the marriage dissolved.

According to him NAN, during the hearing, Oluwatoyin alleged that her husband had made her life unbearable, accusing him of turning her into a “punching bag” and threatening her safety. She further claimed that her father-in-law once advised her to leave the marriage and allegedly offered her ₦50,000 in exchange for a romantic relationship.

According to Oluwatoyin, her husband frequently embarrassed and harassed her in public and failed to fulfill his responsibilities, leaving her to shoulder all family burdens. She stated that she moved out of their home, supposedly under the pretense of renovation, but mainly to escape the constant abuse. She expressed her desire to secure custody of her children, saying she wanted to provide them with a better upbringing.

Ayodeji, however, denied the allegations, describing his wife as irresponsible and accusing her of prioritizing her business and external relationships over their family. He said she rented a new apartment and refused to reconcile with him, despite his attempts to refund part of her rent. Ayodeji maintained that he still loves her and cannot live without her.

Magistrate Abiodun Obademi, the president of the court, urged the couple to reconsider their decision and prioritize peace for the sake of their children. Further deliberations on the case are expected.
