TORONTO, Canada — Environment Canada has now indicated that the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) could receive up to 30 centimetres of snow as a major winter storm continues to impact the city. Schools across the GTA are closed today, and Environment Canada is warning drivers to “prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.”
The snowfall is expected to taper off later this afternoon, according to Environment Canada. In an update on X, Toronto police operations reported that the Don Valley Parkway remains closed due to dangerous winter driving conditions and multiple collisions.
Police have stated that the DVP southbound is closed at Eglinton Avenue down to the Gardiner Expressway because of several minor collisions, black ice, and to allow city snowplows to clear the roadway. Additionally, the DVP northbound is also closed at Bloor Street. Drivers are being warned to expect major delays and to consider alternate routes.
Snow-clearing operations are underway in and around Toronto as residents dig out from Thursday morning’s storm. In a message to our newsroom, Starnews Publisher Akinrinlola Olumide shared that he was locked down and unable to go to work. According to him, it took him and his neighbours an hour to clear the snow from his house’s driveway, only to discover that the community street had yet to be cleared by the snow removal company.
He said, “We can’t go to work today. It’s snowy Monday. The snow on my car is around 9 cm. The snow on the driveway was heavy that it took every one of us an hour to remove it. Unfortunately, after removal, we still can’t go out as snow removal companies are yet to remove the snow on the municipal street road.
“No car can move on the street. Only SUVs are trying their best to manoeuvre,” he added.
Meanwhile, Starnews NG has gathered that most of the city’s main roads have been cleared, although some residential areas are still waiting for service while others have already been attended to. Snow removal trucks are currently working across Toronto to ensure safe passage for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), beginning with expressways and major arterial roads.
Sidewalks are in the process of being plowed, but some have yet to be serviced as of the time of this report, according to Starnews NG.
