The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that at least 9,733 houses in Adamawa State were affected by windstorms in 2024.
Mr. Ladan Ayuba, NEMA’s Head of Operations in Adamawa, revealed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Yola on Saturday.
The affected areas include Jada, Hong, Mayo-Belwa, Madagali, and Fufore, where NEMA has conducted assessments.
Ayuba emphasized the urgency for residents living in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer or higher ground locations to ensure their safety.
This precautionary measure follows predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency indicating that Adamawa is at risk of flooding in 2024.
Areas likely to be affected include Fufore, Yola-North, Yola-South, Girei, Numan, Lamurde, and Gombi local government areas (LGAs).
“For your safety, please avoid flood-prone areas, stay on higher ground, and refrain from dumping refuse in waterways,” Ayuba advised.
He also urged residents to stay informed by listening to radio broadcasts for updates and to follow NEMA’s instructions diligently.
Furthermore, Ayuba warned against drinking or using flood water for washing clothes to prevent cholera outbreaks.
He emphasized that people should only return to their homes when authorities deem it safe, particularly due to ongoing floods resulting from water releases from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
Ayuba highlighted ongoing sensitization efforts and called on traditional leaders to assist in disseminating crucial information to communities without media access.
