The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized Christopher Maikalangu, Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), for claiming he lacks the resources to support security agencies.
Wike made the remarks during the presentation of 50 operational vehicles to security agencies in the FCT on Thursday, describing Maikalangu’s statement as “embarrassing.”
Maikalangu had explained that despite receiving requests for vehicles from security agencies, he was unable to meet their demands due to insufficient resources and capacity.
In a sharp response, Wike said:
“It’s disturbing that a council chairman would publicly declare he has no capacity to provide vehicles for security agencies. You’re the chief security officer of your council—where is the revenue you collect going? Security is everyone’s responsibility, including yours as chairman.”
Drawing from his own experience, Wike added: “When I was a council chairman, I built police stations, purchased vehicles, and ensured they had water. If you can’t even meet basic security needs, what are you doing in office?”
The Minister didn’t shy away from addressing the political implications of Maikalangu’s statement: “You’ve openly admitted you lack capacity. That’s fine. We’ll see what happens in the next election. Luckily, this is live coverage.”
