Why we increased Nigerian passport fees — Immigration

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has justified the recent hike in fees for obtaining Nigerian passports, which is set to take effect from September 1, 2024.

According to the NIS, the decision is aimed at enhancing passport quality, meeting rising production costs, and improving overall service delivery.

The NIS, through a statement on its official X account, highlighted four primary reasons behind the fee increase.

The agency explained that the hike is essential for maintaining international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for passport quality.

Additionally, the NIS noted that the rising cost of materials and production in Nigeria necessitated the adjustment.

Further justifying the increment, the NIS emphasized its plans to establish more passport front offices and biometric centres.

This expansion is intended to improve accessibility for Nigerians, reduce congestion at existing centres, and speed up the passport issuance process.

Lastly, the NIS pointed out that the increase aligns with the government’s push for local content, as the funds generated will help achieve the complete domestication of Nigerian passport booklet production.

The service also encouraged applicants to use the automated payment platform available on its official website for a more efficient application process.
