Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has responded to remarks made by former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, over his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying Saraki is in no position to question his decision.
Okowa, who moved to the APC alongside Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and their supporters, was received into the party on Monday by Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman Umar Ganduje, and other top members of the ruling party.
He explained during an interview on Tuesday that the move was carefully considered and based on what he believes is the best course for him and his political allies in Delta State.
He stated that the political group he belongs to in the state had jointly decided to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to recent developments within the party.
According to him, the direction the PDP has taken in the past few months gave them reasons to believe that the party may not be strong enough to challenge in the 2027 elections.
Okowa recalled that Saraki himself had once left the PDP for the APC and later returned, suggesting that it would be wrong for someone with such a history to criticize another for doing the same.
He stressed that he prefers not to engage in personal exchanges but felt it was necessary to clarify the reasons behind his move.
The former vice presidential candidate noted that loyalty to his political base was a major reason for his switch, and without that structure, he would not be able to remain active in politics.
He also pointed out that the unity and views of political stakeholders in Delta State played a key role in the final decision to join the APC.
