The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has clarified why he called for Justice Binta Nyako to step down from presiding over his case.
According to the family, Kanu’s request was driven by the judge’s refusal to adhere to the Supreme Court’s directives concerning their son’s trial. They explained that the Supreme Court had criticized Nyako’s earlier decision to revoke Kanu’s bail, and they were puzzled by her failure to reinstate it after the apex court’s ruling.
In their response to Justice Nyako’s decision to recuse herself from the case, Kanu’s family accused her of displaying bias. Prince Emmanuel Kanu, speaking on behalf of the family, described the judge’s recusal as a positive move.
The family, having lost confidence in Justice Nyako’s handling of the case, expressed hope that a new judge would follow the Supreme Court’s previous ruling.
“The reason Nnamdi Kanu requested the Presiding Judge to step down was due to her failure to comply with the Supreme Court’s orders. In our view, she was neither willing nor prepared to follow the court’s directives, and we believe her bias against our son was evident,” said Prince Emmanuel Kanu.
The family further argued that Kanu should not be facing trial in Nigeria, citing his extraordinary rendition from Kenya as a violation of international law. They maintained that the manner in which he was abducted and brought to Nigeria nullifies the federal government’s right to prosecute him.
