The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, has affirmed that the scheme will prioritise rural communities when posting corps members.
He stated that more corps members, particularly medical personnel, would be deployed to rural areas.
He explained that this decision aims to improve the wellbeing of underprivileged Nigerians.
Ahmed made this known while hosting the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Muyi Aina, at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters, Maitama, Abuja.
According to him, “Nigeria’s rural areas need corps services more than the urban centres.”
He further expressed satisfaction with the commitment shown by Nigerian graduates, including corps medical personnel, to serve their country.
He directed the Corps Welfare and Health Services Department to collaborate with NPHCDA officials to review and revitalise the now dormant partnership between the two agencies.
The Executive Director of NPHCDA, Dr Muyi Aina, commended the NYSC for staffing rural health centres with corps medical personnel, whose contributions have made a significant impact on the nation’s health sector.
Pointing out the shortage of medical personnel nationwide, Aina recounted his service year experience when he worked in three different primary health care centres in Apapa, Lagos, due to the scarcity of medical personnel.
He added that one purpose of his visit was to explore the possibility of reviving the partnership between the two agencies, which had become inactive.
He promised that his agency would support NYSC camp clinics with essential medical supplies and consumables.
