Lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly have dismissed reports suggesting that they held a reconciliation meeting with Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Obasa was reinstated as Speaker on Monday, March 3, 2025, following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down under pressure from party leaders and other influential figures.
A report on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, claimed that a reconciliatory meeting took place between Obasa and other lawmakers.
However, those present at the gathering have denied that the meeting was meant for reconciliation.
According to some lawmakers, the meeting had nothing to do with settling differences.
They stated that one of the reasons cited for Obasa’s initial removal occurred again, as the meeting, scheduled for 1 p.m., did not start until 2:30 p.m.
They also noted that Obasa made no effort to apologize for the delay and proceeded straight to the agenda.
One of the lawmakers who attended the meeting confirmed that it was centered on a legal case involving the suspended Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko.
The case is expected to be heard on Thursday, and concerns were raised over the involvement of the Department of State Services (DSS), which led to the invitation and arrest of some members of the Assembly.
The meeting reportedly lasted only a few minutes before everyone dispersed.
Despite Obasa’s return, tensions remain high among lawmakers, and there is still discontent over how the reinstatement was handled.
Some members believe the decision was made out of respect for senior political figures rather than out of personal support for the Speaker.
They are now waiting to see whether Obasa will step down voluntarily to honour an agreement made with party elders.
