The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has announced that its exams will proceed as planned despite the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and its affiliated unions.
In a memo addressed to school principals, dated May 31 and signed by A.T.A.Y. Lawson on behalf of the Head of National Office, WAEC confirmed: “Please be formally informed that the conduct of WASSCE SC 2024 goes on as scheduled.”
WAEC emphasized that its exams are being conducted across West African countries, and it is important that Nigerian students are not disadvantaged by missing these exams.
“While we acknowledge the concerns of the unions and Nigerians at large, the WASSCE SC is ongoing in other member countries of WAEC, and it is crucial that Nigerian students are not deprived of the opportunity to take these exams,” the memo stated.
The NLC and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria have declared an indefinite nationwide strike in response to the federal government’s failure to meet their demands for a minimum wage increase.
The NLC is demanding a minimum wage of N494,000, citing the rising cost of living, whereas the federal government has proposed N60,000.
