By Charles Maduka

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the success of the fast-approaching 11th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games, scheduled to take place from 20th to 29th September 2024.

This was disclosed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, on Thursday, 15th August 2024, while receiving FASU officials who visited UNILAG for a facility tour.

Meeting with the delegation in the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room on the 10th floor of the UNILAG Senate House, Professor Ogunsola assured that the university is actively engaging with stakeholders and partners to ensure smooth entry for international athletes and their officials.
Additionally, the university’s sporting facilities are being upgraded to meet, and even surpass, the expectations of the athletes.

Although she identified the scarcity of resources as a significant challenge, Professor Ogunsola expressed confidence that within the next two weeks, the university’s ongoing arrangements will become more visible and impressive.

In their remarks, the acting President of NUGA, Dr Mohammed Bawa, the FASU Secretary General, Dr Kabenge Aligawesa Peninnah, and the President of the West Africa University Sports Federation (WAUSF), Mr Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, commended the management of UNILAG for their enthusiasm, quality efforts, and the level of preparedness shown in organising the continental sports event.

The FASU delegation also announced that the 27th NUGA event, initially scheduled for October 2024, has been cancelled to allow full preparation and participation in the 11th FASU Games tagged “Lagos 2024”, which will be co-hosted by the University of Lagos and Lagos State University (LASU).
