Underage voters allegedly participate in Bauchi LG election

Reports have surfaced that underage voters allegedly participated in Bauchi State’s local government election held on Saturday. Images circulating online show children holding ballot papers and standing in line, preparing to cast their votes.

According to Vanguard, video footage captured children voting at Maciya Polling Unit, Senior Primary School Polling Unit, and Bunusai Polling Unit in Ningi West and Ningi East Wards.

In a surprising twist, Yunusa Muhammad, the African Action Congress, AAC, candidate, was declared the winner of the Papa Ward councilorship election.

The election, held on August 17, 2024, saw Yunusa Muhammad secure 1,156 votes, defeating Ashiru Mohammad Papa of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who garnered 1,053 votes.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Idris Mohammad, finished third with 290 votes.

“I, Muhammad Abdullahi Abubakar, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer of the Papa Ward councilorship election in Bauchi held on the 17th day of August, 2024. That Yunusa Muhammad of AAC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Abubakar declared at the collation centre in Darazo on Saturday.
