A man arrested in Delta State for allegedly trying to buy illegal weapons has been confirmed not to be a serving member of the British military.
The British High Commission made this known after concerns were raised by a group of Niger Delta leaders and civil society groups who demanded a full investigation into the case.
The man, identified as Micah Polo, was arrested by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) during a secret operation that took place near Asaba.
He was reportedly caught while exchanging arms meant to create trouble in Warri.
More than 50 AK-47 rifles, several pump-action guns, and thousands of bullets were recovered during the operation.
Polo, who was born in Nigeria, was later caught again in Lagos while he tried to board a flight to the United Kingdom.
Security agents believe he was not working alone and are still looking for others involved in the illegal deal.
The British High Commission, responding to the claims on Wednesday, said Polo is not an active member of the UK Armed Forces.
While confirming that he once served in the UK military reserves, they noted that he held only a junior position and was not an officer.
They also said that due to laws protecting personal data, they could not release more information about Polo’s time in the reserves.
The UK authorities assured that they are aware of the situation and are cooperating with Nigerian officials where necessary.
