A Nigerian man based in the United Kingdom has reportedly called off his wedding after receiving a bride price list from his fiancée’s family, estimated to be worth around N3.5 million.
The extensive list, which included items such as livestock, beverages, clothing, and cash gifts, was deemed excessive by the groom-to-be, leading to the breakdown of their engagement.
The incident was shared on social media by a user, Princess Adeola, who highlighted the man’s disappointment and the cultural pressures that often place financial burdens on prospective grooms.
According to Adeola, the man was deeply committed to his fiancée and had plans to relocate her abroad and finance her education. However, he was heartbroken when she supported her family’s demands, justifying them as a reflection of Nigeria’s challenging economic conditions.
Adeola revealed, “He was truly in love and had mapped out plans for her future. But after receiving the bride price list, he felt betrayed. The demands were overwhelming, and he couldn’t understand why the woman he loved sided with her family, citing rising living costs in Nigeria.”
The man, frustrated by the situation, likened the demands to “selling a child” and questioned the sustainability of a marriage that begins with such financial strain. Ultimately, he decided to end the relationship, stating that his plans to support and invest in his fiancée’s future should have been prioritized over material expectations.
Adeola added, “He believes this kind of practice turns marriage into a transaction, which isn’t healthy. He’s heartbroken but has resolved to cut ties and move on.”
She also criticized the fiancée and her family, noting that their excessive demands and lack of understanding had cost them a meaningful future together.
