UBTH doctor shot dead

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has confirmed the death of one of its staff, Dr. Alex Ogunniyi, a physiotherapist, who was fatally shot near the hospital last Friday.

In a statement issued by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Joshua Uwaila, the management expressed deep sadness over the incident and revealed that formal requests had been sent to the Edo State Police Command and the Department of State Services (DSS) to launch a full investigation and apprehend those responsible.

According to eyewitness accounts, Dr. Ogunniyi was heading to a nearby restaurant to get lunch when he was caught in a crossfire. It was reported that a vehicle was chasing another, and gunshots were fired during the pursuit. One of the bullets struck the physiotherapist in the neck.

He was immediately rushed to the hospital’s emergency unit but was confirmed dead shortly after.

In reaction to the tragedy, some healthcare workers at UBTH staged a peaceful protest, demanding justice for their colleague and calling for improved security in the area.
