A fatal helicopter crash occurred at Fort Novosel Army base in Alabama on Wednesday afternoon, claiming the life of a flight instructor and injuring a student pilot.
The AH-64 Apache helicopter was engaged in routine training when it went down, according to the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence.
The Associated Press reports that the instructor, Daniel Munger, 46, a retired Army contractor, was killed in the crash. The student pilot was airlifted to a hospital for further evaluation. The incident happened approximately 94 miles south of Montgomery.
Growing concerns over the crash at Fort Novosel Army base have prompted a formal investigation, with military authorities withholding details on the circumstances surrounding the incident until further notice.
“Our primary concern is the welfare and health of the student pilot and care and concern for the family of the deceased,” Maj. Gen. Clair A. Gill, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel commanding general, said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.
The AH-64 Apache helicopter, a two-person aircraft, crashed at Fort Novosel, the US Army’s primary training hub for helicopter pilots. Notably, Fort Novosel was formerly known as Fort Rucker, a renowned facility for Army aviation training.
