The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai eliminated 70 terrorists, including three senior commanders, during a clearance operation in the Timbuktu Triangle, a notorious terrorist enclave in Borno State.
According to NAN, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the three-pronged operation, launched on January 16, aimed to dismantle terrorist activities in the region.
The operation led to multiple encounters with terrorists, resulting in the elimination of over 70, including notable commanders such as Talha, a special forces commander; Malam Umar, an operations commander; and Abu Yazeed, a brigade commander.
The statement highlighted that the terrorists employed various tactics to resist the troops, including the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Person-Borne IEDs (suicide bombers), and Vehicle-Borne IEDs (explosive-laden vehicles). Despite these efforts, the troops, well-acquainted with these tactics, successfully repelled the attacks and even shot down drones deployed by the terrorists.
General Buba revealed that 22 soldiers lost their lives during the operation, with several others injured. He urged the media to refrain from publishing the names of the fallen soldiers until their families are formally notified.
The Defence Headquarters assured the public that the operation is still ongoing, and updates will be provided as it progresses. The military’s efforts in the Timbuktu Triangle represent a significant step in the fight against terrorism in the region, as troops continue to dismantle terrorist strongholds.
