The Federal Medical Centre Nguru Yobe State has witnessed significant transformations under the visionary leadership of Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman.
The Centre has entered a new era of healthcare par excellence. Since her appointment as the Medical Director in November 2022, Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman has spearheaded a series of innovative projects and renovations, transforming the hospital into a beacon of hope for patients and a hub of medical excellence and reputation.
Her achievements are a testament to her unwavering commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and enhancing patient experiences. The completion of inherited projects such as Pharmacy complex phase ll, theatre complex phase ll and the construction of store complex have significantly enhanced the hospital’s capacity to provide essential medical services.
The renovation of key wards, including the Gynae ward, Labour Ward, and Obstetrics Ward, has created a more conducive environment for patients and healthcare providers.
The state-of-the-art transformation of the accident and emergency unit is a shining example of Professor Usman’s dedication to providing quality healthcare services. The renovation and modification of the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) have ensured that newborns receive the specialized care they need.
The construction of walkway fencing for the labour, Obstetrics and Gynaecology wards has improved patient and staff safety, while the provision of essential equipment and consumables such as the EEG machine and many others have enhanced the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality care. Additionally, solar lights have been installed at the Administrative block and GOPD as well as other wards, providing a sustainable source of energy.
To curb the acute shortage of staff accommodation, the MD sought for the intervention of the Yobe State government, and the Governor, Mai Mala Buni out of his magnanimity, graciously approved the construction of five 3-bedroom flats to ease the housing problems deterring doctors and other medical staff from taking up appointment at the Centre.
The College of Nursing Sciences was equally not left out as it witnesses massive renovation and conversion of structures to meet up with its needs in her short period of leadership. Her achievements extend beyond physical infrastructure to prioritizing education and training, leading to the accreditation of the Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes at the College of Nursing Sciences.
Worthy of note is an earlier accreditation for Housemanship by the Medical and Dental council of Nigeria and also accreditation for membership and fellowship by the West African College of Surgeons faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. These will help in reducing shortages of nurses and midwives and other human resources for health in the state.
She has also made significant strides in bringing new projects to the Centre that are currently ongoing such as the construction of a state-of-the-art cytology and Histopathology laboratory; a modern diagnostic center by the NSIA to further enhance the hospital’s capabilities which demonstrates her dedication to collaboration, community engagement and development of the medical Centre to be the best in the region.
The ongoing trauma Center and specialty clinic are receiving the highest attention to ensure speedy completion.
