Traffic wardens in the Nigerian Police Force have cried of alleged marginalization in terms of their promotion compared to their counterparts in the regular police force even as they called for reinvigoration of that section of the police force to check their being undermined.
They suggested to the Inspector General of Police to appoint a head that would be responsible for their welfare and report to the police management.
The wardens through their counsel, Olayiwola Afolabi (SAN) & Co. in a letter of Appeal to the Inspector General of Police said their mates who were recruited together in 2007 and 2008 into the regular police force have become Inspectors while they are still sergeants even as they lamented that a signal by the former Inspector General of Police that they should be promoted accordingly has remained unattended to.
The letter which was also sent to President Bola Tinubu and the Chairman, Police Service Commission, signed by A. D. Yusuf, (Mrs) on behalf of the law firm said “These sets of people have suffered stagnation in the area of promotion as their mates who were recruited in 2007 and 2008 are still Sergeant while the conventional police recruited from 2007-2009 had been promoted to the rank of Inspector. It is pathetic to say even traffic wardens recruited in the year 1991 were still at the rank of Inspectors but their counterparts (conventional police officers) are already at the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Police now.
“Our clients have suffered serious great marginalization and victimization in the hands of the Nigerian Police Force due to the stagnation in their promotion which affects their salaries, benefits and training opportunities.
“The former Inspector General of Police saw the plight of our clients and ordered their promotion through a signal dated 13th day of June, 2023, painfully, the present Inspector General of Police has refused and failed to implement the said signal ever since his resumption to office. Which refusal has added to the suffering of our clients whose promotions remain stagnant?
“We use this medium to passionately plead that your humble office should look into the pathetic situation of our clients so that they can be reinvigorated traffic warden service as an autonomies entity and be recognized as a specialist arm of the Nigeria Police Force for their career progression be equated with that of their counterparts in the Nigerian Police Force.”
