Supporters of President Bola Tinubu have continued to place campaign posters across Abuja even though the president recently asked them to hold off on promoting his possible 2027 bid.
The posters have appeared in various parts of the capital, including busy areas like Airport Road and the Central Business District, drawing public attention just weeks before the president marks two years in office.
This comes despite the fact that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not yet given a green light for campaigns to begin.
According to Nigeria’s election rules, campaign activities are only allowed within a specific period before the elections.
However, supporters of the president have already started promoting his re-election without waiting for an official announcement.
Earlier in April, the presidency issued a statement asking those behind the campaign billboards to stop.
The message made it clear that the president had not given permission to anyone or group to begin campaigning on his behalf.
It also reminded Nigerians that campaign activities should not start until INEC publishes the timetable for the election.
Even with this warning, large posters and billboards calling for Tinubu’s return in 2027 continue to show up. Some of them bear slogans encouraging citizens to support the movement.
In one of the displays, the president’s image appears alongside Government Ekpemupolo, a former militant known as Tompolo, who is believed to back the campaign.
Despite the presidency’s message and the legal restrictions, there is no evidence that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) authorities have made efforts to remove the billboards.
The agency in charge of outdoor advertising in Abuja, the Department of Outdoor Advertisement and Signage (DOAS), is responsible for approving and regulating such displays.
However, it seems no action has been taken so far to address the matter.
Attempts to reach the DOAS director for comment were unsuccessful.
His assistant only confirmed that he was not available.
Without clear enforcement of the rules, the posters remain in place, suggesting that those behind the campaign do not intend to back down anytime soon.
