Kola Ologbondiyan, a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, claiming they have deepened Nigeria’s economic troubles and increased hardship for citizens.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Monday, Ologbondiyan faulted the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, describing them as poorly executed policies that have worsened the standard of living for many Nigerians.
According to him, the abrupt removal of subsidies under Tinubu’s administration contrasts with the more gradual approach taken by past PDP governments, which included measures to alleviate the burden on citizens. “Under PDP administrations, subsidy removal was carefully phased and accompanied by palliatives to ease the transition. What we have now is a rushed decision without adequate support for Nigerians,” he stated.
Ologbondiyan dismissed the APC’s distribution of subsidized rice as insufficient to address the economic challenges facing citizens. “Nigerians need more than rice to survive in this harsh economic climate,” he said.
He also criticized the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to float the naira, noting that it has caused severe currency devaluation and an increase in living costs. “The floating of the naira, combined with subsidy removal, has left Nigerians struggling to cope with skyrocketing prices. These policies demand careful planning, not abrupt execution,” he explained.
The former PDP spokesperson urged the government to adopt long-term solutions such as developing an effective public transport system and stabilizing the economy through strategic interventions. “It’s time for the government to implement meaningful, people-centered policies rather than paying lip service to the plight of Nigerians,” he concluded.
