President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the House of Representatives to confirm Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
The request was presented in a letter read by House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during a plenary session on Tuesday.
In the letter, Tinubu cited the 1999 constitution and the Armed Forces Act, noting that Oluyede’s appointment aligns with these legal frameworks.
The president expressed confidence in Oluyede’s ability to lead, citing his professionalism and significant contributions to the Nigerian military.
Oluyede, who was appointed acting COAS on October 30, took over after the illness of Taoreed Lagbaja, the former army chief, who passed away on November 5.
Following Lagbaja’s death, Oluyede was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general. Before his current role, Oluyede served as the commander of the infantry corps in Kaduna.
He joined the Nigerian Army in 1992 and was promoted to major general in 2020.
Both he and Lagbaja were classmates at the 39th Regular Course. The president had previously sought Senate approval for Oluyede’s appointment as well.
