The Federal Executive Council has decided to rename the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University in recognition of the contributions of General Yakubu Gowon, a former Nigerian head of state.
This decision was announced during the council’s final meeting of the year, led by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The renaming is a tribute to Gowon, who recently turned 90, acknowledging his leadership during Nigeria’s civil war and his efforts in post-war reconciliation and development.
His tenure saw significant infrastructural advancements and the expansion of educational opportunities, driven by economic growth during the oil boom.
Founded in 1988, the university has served a diverse student body with both conventional and distance learning programs.
Official approval of the new name will be sought from the National Assembly to formalize the change.
