President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rejected rumors of a rift with state governors over his push for local government autonomy, emphasizing the importance of cooperation for Nigeria’s development.
According to Vanguard, this clarification follows the Supreme Court’s ruling in July 2024, which granted financial independence to the country’s 774 local governments. Although many governors have held local government elections, there are concerns regarding their full commitment to implementing the autonomy initiative.
During a New Year visit by governors, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Tinubu stressed the vital role state governors play in Nigeria’s national progress.
“You are the backbone of Nigeria’s prosperity. The federal government accounts for only 30-35% of the allocated revenue, with the rest under your control. The agricultural sector and land resources are in your hands. Your leadership is essential for driving economic growth and food security,” Tinubu remarked.
Commitment to Grassroots Development
Reaffirming his dedication to grassroots development, Tinubu denied any rift over local government autonomy and emphasized the need for unity and effective governance at the local level.
“There is no dispute about local government autonomy. You manage your local governments, and together, we can bring about change. Collaboration is key to building a better Nigeria,” he said.
Tinubu also urged governors to focus on agriculture as a means to stabilize the economy and strengthen the currency, highlighting the success of existing agricultural policies.
“We need to increase production, work harder, and stabilize our currency. Prosperity is achievable, but it requires consistent effort from all of us,” he added.
Progress and National Pride
Tinubu commended the governors for their achievements and encouraged them to take pride in the progress made in their states.
“There is no state without notable development. I will bear the criticisms, while you enjoy the privileges. Together, we will build a nation we can all be proud of,” he stated.
Reflecting on his presidency over the past 19 months, Tinubu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s resilience and the leadership of his administration.
“I am grateful for the mandate Nigerians gave me. This is a shared journey, and I appreciate where we are today and where we are headed,” he said.
Tinubu also announced plans to visit Enugu State on January 4 as part of his ongoing nationwide engagements.
Governors’ Support and Achievements
Kwara State Governor and NGF Chairman Abdulrahman Abdulrazak voiced the governors’ support for Tinubu’s administration, particularly in strengthening local security and advancing food security initiatives.
“The policies are working. For instance, Jigawa State had a bumper harvest, and traders exported much of it due to the strength of the currency. We are also encouraging states to stockpile reserves for future needs,” Abdulrazak explained.
He also highlighted how economic restructuring has increased state revenues, enabling significant development projects despite inflation.
“I’ve achieved more in the past two years than during my entire first term. With increased funding, we are overcoming inflation and driving progress,” Abdulrazak added, encouraging Tinubu to visit states to witness the ongoing transformations firsthand.
The governors reaffirmed their commitment to working alongside the federal government to enhance security, strengthen the economy, and achieve sustainable development across the nation.
