President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for a delegation of Islamic leaders, representing the Council of Ulamas, to engage in further diplomatic discussions with the military junta in Niger Republic. Earlier, vanguard News reported that President Tinubu held a meeting with the Islamic leaders, led by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, within the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday. These leaders had received President Tinubu’s authorization to negotiate on behalf of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) with the coup leaders in Niger Republic.
During their visit to the State House, the Ulamas briefed President Tinubu about their conversation with General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the head of the junta. Subsequently, a statement from the Presidency indicated that President Tinubu has sanctioned the Islamic leaders’ return to Niger Republic for another round of dialogue with the military junta.
President Tinubu urged the Islamic leaders to facilitate the restoration of constitutional democratic governance in Niger Republic, accelerating progress in their ongoing dialogue with the military junta. He highlighted his commitment to resolving the crisis through peaceful means, even as there are individuals advocating for more aggressive intervention. President Tinubu conveyed to the Islamic delegation the necessity of holding the military junta accountable for the precarious situation they have placed the people of Niger Republic in. Furthermore, President Tinubu assured that ECOWAS remains dedicated to utilizing diplomatic channels to engage with all parties involved and to seek a peaceful resolution to the impasse in Niger Republic.
