The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, has clarified that drones used by terrorist groups in Nigeria are not military-grade and do not pose a significant threat in the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
Speaking during a media briefing on Friday in Abuja about the recent airstrike in Sokoto State, Maj.-Gen. Buba emphasized that these drones lack the sophistication to impact military operations effectively.
“These drones are not professional or military-grade equipment,” he said. “They are essentially toys that have been modified to carry out basic tasks. While they may seem alarming, they are neither effective nor a threat to our counter-terrorism operations. Nevertheless, we are addressing this development.”
He further explained that the use of drones in conflict scenarios is not a new phenomenon, noting that drones come in various classes and capabilities.
Maj.-Gen. Buba also dismissed rumors of foreign military bases within Nigeria, describing them as baseless and mischievous. He reiterated that Nigeria does not host any foreign bases and would not serve as a platform for proxy wars.
Addressing claims of a supposed French base in Nigeria, he said, “There is no truth to such claims. This is merely a distraction, particularly from certain leaders who should focus on addressing issues in their own countries.”
The Defence Headquarters assured Nigerians of its continued efforts to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and tackle the threats posed by terrorist groups effectively.
