Tension in Zamfara as Parallel House of Assembly Emerges, Suspended Lawmakers Elect New Speaker

A fresh political drama has unfolded in Zamfara State as a parallel House of Assembly has emerged, deepening the existing crisis within the state legislature.

Nine lawmakers who were suspended in February 2024 over alleged misconduct, conspiracy, mischief, and holding an illegal sitting have resurfaced with a bold move.

The group convened in Gusau, the state capital, where they held a session and elected Hon. Bashir Aliyu Gummi as their new Speaker.

The development has sparked concerns over a looming constitutional crisis in the state, with political observers warning of potential clashes between the two factions.

It remains unclear if the action of the suspended lawmakers will be recognized by the judiciary or relevant authorities.

As of now, the main House of Assembly leadership is yet to issue an official response. L
