The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted reports of a grid collapse on Saturday, 11 January 2025, clarifying that the national power grid remained operational despite disruptions.
In a statement released on Saturday and cited by Politics Nigeria, TCN attributed the power supply disruption to the tripping of two major transmission lines—the Osogbo-Ihovbor line and the Benin-Omotosho line. The company noted that the issue was limited to Lagos and did not constitute a grid collapse.
“At approximately 13:41 Hrs on Saturday, the Osogbo-Ihovbor line tripped, followed by the tripping of the Benin-Omotosho line. This caused an impact on the bulk supply to Lagos,” the statement detailed.
TCN disclosed that the grid’s total power generation stood at 4,335.63MW before the incident, dropping to 2,573.23MW following the line tripping. The company stressed that this was not indicative of a grid collapse.
The disruption affected several power plants, including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras. However, TCN assured that all plants had been restored, with the exception of the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, which remains under restoration.
The company called on the public and media organisations to avoid disseminating unverified information and highlighted the importance of accurate reporting. “As we continue to enhance the transmission grid despite the challenges we face, it is critical to understand the impact of misinformation on the public’s perception,” the statement concluded.
TCN reaffirmed its commitment to building a more robust and reliable power transmission network for the country.
