The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has described President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform initiatives as a much-needed step toward addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Idris made this statement during an event organized by the Kaduna Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, themed “Tax Reforms: The Role of Public Relations in Fostering Constructive Dialogue for National Economic Renaissance.”
He pointed out that Nigeria’s tax system suffers from outdated structures and a lack of trust among taxpayers. “Around the world, effective taxation is a critical tool for governments to fund social services for their citizens,” Idris said. “In Nigeria, however, flaws in the design and implementation of our tax system, coupled with negative attitudes toward taxation, have made reforms overdue.”
The minister commended the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reform for its inclusive and transparent approach. He noted that the review of tax laws currently underway is a crucial step in setting a foundation for economic recovery.
Idris also reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to participatory governance. “President Tinubu has made it clear that the Executive will engage with all stakeholders to ensure that concerns are fully addressed. Open communication with the National Assembly and other stakeholders will remain a priority in implementing these reforms,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to view the reforms as a collective effort aimed at long-term benefits. “We are all part of this process as one people and one nation. While sacrifices are being asked of everyone, the social and economic benefits of these necessary reforms will be shared by all,” Idris concluded.
The minister’s remarks underscore the government’s focus on driving economic transformation through inclusive policies and stakeholder collaboration.
