Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has lost his mother, just two months after the death of his father.
According to Punch, the South Africa-based goalkeeper shared the heartbreaking news on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.
“RIP mom, worst year of my life already,” Nwabali posted on New Year’s Day, accompanied by tears and heartbreak emojis. “A very very crazy world indeed,” he added before sharing the sad announcement.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) offered its condolences, expressing their support for Nwabali.
“Our heartfelt condolences to Stanley Nwabali on the loss of his mother. Stay strong, Stanley. Sending you strength and support during this difficult time. You are not alone; we are all with you,” the NFF said.
Nwabali’s father passed away in November, just hours after he had played in goal for the Super Eagles in their 1-1 draw against Benin Republic during a crucial 2025 AFCON qualification match.
Though the cause of his mother’s death has not been revealed, her passing has come as a devastating shock to the goalkeeper, especially after he posted a positive 2024 recap video on New Year’s Day, thanking Chippa United FC, the Super Eagles, and his fans for their support, while expressing excitement for 2025.
Messages of sympathy have poured in from fans and colleagues alike. Journalist Latifat Adebayo-Ohio wrote, “So sorry for your loss. May God comfort you and your family.” A fan, Hillary Remy, also shared her condolences: “So sorry for your loss. May God strengthen you and all your family members.” Another fan, Adewale Damilare, commented, “Accept my heartfelt condolences, chief.”
