The Lagos branch of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee has announced plans for a mass protest at MTN Nigeria’s headquarters in response to the company’s data tariff increase.
The telecom company recently raised its 15GB weekly data plan from N2,000 to N6,000, sparking backlash. Although MTN reversed the hike, students argue that the changes are misleading.
They claimed that MTN replaced the 15GB plan with a 7GB bundle at N3,000, which they view as a further burden on students.
NANS is calling for an immediate restoration of the original 15GB plan at the old price and the introduction of affordable data plans for students.
They also demanded government and regulatory intervention to prevent further price hikes.
A protest is scheduled, with additional details to follow, and NANS is urging youth groups and the public to join in resisting the increased costs.
