Security groups in South West Nigeria, including the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) and the Hunters’ Association, have criticized the region’s governors for not cooperating with them to address the growing threat of bandits and terrorists entering the area from the North.
This concern follows warnings by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde about the movement of bandits and terrorists from North-Central Nigeria into the South West.
Gani Adams, the Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, expressed frustration over the lack of response from South West governors to his proposals for collaboration.
He emphasized that the region has several private security groups ready to tackle the threats if given approval.
According to Adams, Yoruba land is prepared to resist any criminal activities, and efforts are ongoing to ensure peace and safety.
However, he pointed out that state governments must approve and support these initiatives.
The OPC, through its leadership in Ogun and Osun states, revealed that they have written to governors and traditional rulers seeking collaboration.
Unfortunately, no responses have been received.
Despite this, OPC members have been working with local police to address insecurity at the grassroots level.
Similarly, the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS), formerly known as Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Services, called on governors to provide operational support to combat crime in forested areas.
While some governors, such as those of Oyo and Ogun states, have offered assistance, others have yet to engage fully.
In a related development, the Amotekun Corps in Ondo State announced their commitment to ridding the region of criminals.
Recently, the corps arrested 21 suspected criminals, including kidnappers and violators of anti-open grazing laws, Vanguard reports.
Adetunji Adeleye, the Chairman of the South West Amotekun Commanders, assured residents that the region is not a safe haven for criminals, and new strategies are being implemented to ensure safety.
