A tragic road accident along the Kaltungo-Cham Road in Gombe State has claimed the lives of seven people, with 31 others injured.
According to Vanguard, the incident, involving a lone truck loaded with soft drinks and carrying 38 passengers, took place around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. Samson Kaura, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander for Gombe State, confirmed the details.
Kaura stated that the crash was likely caused by brake failure.
The victims comprised 34 men, two women, and two children. Among the fatalities were five men, one woman, and one child. Their bodies have been taken to the General Hospital Kaltungo morgue, while the injured are receiving medical attention at the same hospital.
The FRSC commander urged the public to refrain from traveling in trailers, a common cost-cutting practice, stressing the significant risks involved. “Weigh the cost of accidents and lives lost against the cost of transportation fares. Trailers and large vehicles are meant for goods, not passengers,” he said.
Kaura also stressed the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to prevent mechanical failures and reduce the risk of such accidents. “Routine checks are vital to ensure vehicles are roadworthy and to minimize crashes caused by technical issues,” he concluded.
