Senate Wants Super Highway Extended to North-East, Calls for More Road Repairs

The Senate has asked the Federal Government to focus on fixing roads across the country, stressing the need for better transportation networks.

Lawmakers also want the Renewed Hope Super Highway Road Project to include the North-East to boost the region’s connection to economic activities.

The request came after Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje, representing Gombe Central, moved a motion. He pointed out that out of the ₦4.2 trillion set aside for road projects, only ₦19 billion was allocated for rehabilitation in the North-East.

During discussions, senators raised concerns about the uneven distribution of funds. Some suggested summoning the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for an explanation.

Senator Olamilekan clarified that ₦4.2 trillion was allocated for the Badagry-Sokoto Road and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, while ₦500 billion was reserved for road rehabilitation. However, Senator Goje disagreed with his breakdown, leading to a brief argument.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio stepped in to calm the situation. He urged for better funding for roads in the North-East to ensure fair development across all regions.
