Senate reshuffles committees, appoints new chairmen, see list

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, commended lawmakers for their dedication during the 2025 budget defense sessions, highlighting their crucial role in crafting a viable financial plan for the upcoming year.

Akpabio made these remarks as the Senate resumed on Tuesday after a two-week recess.

In line with President Bola Tinubu’s approval of bills to establish development commissions in various regions, the Senate has made some adjustments, appointing new chairpersons and deputy chairpersons to oversee these commissions.

Akpabio announced, “Senator Babangida Hussaini and Senator Muntari Dandutse will serve as the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on the North West Development Commission.”

“Likewise, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Senator Kenneth Eze have been appointed as Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission. Senator Titus Zam and Senator Isa Jibrin will lead the Senate Committee on the North Central Development Commission.”

Additionally, the Senate has reshuffled some standing committees. Abdul Ningi has transitioned from the Population Committee to chair the Senate Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA). Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, previously overseeing the Local Content Committee, now heads the Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations.

Other notable appointments include Senator Garba Maidoki as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development and Joel Thomas as the new Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content. Victor Umeh, who formerly led the Diaspora Committee, will now chair the Senate Committee on National Population and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

The Senate also extended its condolences to the Speaker of the House of Representatives regarding the passing of former Deputy Majority Whip Oriyomi Onanuga in January. Akpabio led lawmakers in observing a minute of silence in her memory before adjourning the plenary session.
