The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions has recommended a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, following her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
This decision comes in the wake of a tumultuous ongoing plenary session on Thursday, during which the committee advised that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s salary and security details be withdrawn. The Committee’s chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen, presented the panel’s findings, stating that Akpoti-Uduaghan was found guilty of all allegations against her due to her failure to submit herself to the legislative committee for a review of her conduct.
In addition to the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan is expected to issue a formal apology to the Senate for actions deemed disrespectful. The controversy first erupted earlier this year when she accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office, claiming that her motions regarding the Ajaokuta Steel Company were deliberately obstructed.
Furthermore, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio referred to her as a “night club girl” on the Senate floor, a remark for which he later issued an apology. These serious allegations were formalized in a petition she resubmitted to the Senate.
In response to the accusations, Akpabio has consistently denied any wrongdoing, emphasizing his respect for women and refuting claims of misconduct. He expressed disappointment over the committee’s recommendation, labeling the allegations as unfounded.
The Senate is scheduled to debate the committee’s report, with discussions expected to focus on potential amendments before a final decision is reached. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s absence during the committee’s investigation has raised further concerns, as she failed to appear despite prior notifications.
As the situation continues to unfold, all eyes are on the Senate’s forthcoming deliberations, which will ultimately determine the final outcome of the committee’s recommendations.
Additionally, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing the Cross River South senatorial district, has been closely monitoring the developments. Meanwhile, Senator Steve Karimi from Kogi West (APC) expressed his regret for previously backing Akpoti-Uduaghan for a leadership role.
On the other hand, minority leader Senator Abba Moro from Benue South (PDP) proposed that the suspension be reduced to three months, asserting that this duration would be more than sufficient to address the issues at hand.
