Security guard, 24 others remanded for alleged murder of Ajayi Crowther varsity student

An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan has remanded a security guard from Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, along with 24 others, in connection with the alleged murder of a student at the institution.

The security guard, Femi Oladoye, and the other defendants are facing charges of conspiracy and murder.

Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi did not take their pleas due to a lack of jurisdiction. She instructed the police to forward the case file to the state director of public prosecutions for further advice.

The case has been adjourned until July 8 for mention.

Prosecutor Funke Fawole informed the court that the alleged offences took place on May 24 at 9:00 p.m. at the university.

Ms Fawole alleged that the defendants unlawfully caused the death of a  22-year-old student, Jeffry Akro, by beating him with planks and wire.

She alleged that Mr Oladoye and a male porter in the university, Kehinde Olabusuyi (one of the suspects), failed to rescue Mr Akro from aggrieved students, who eventually beat him to death.

She said that the offences contravened Sections 516 and 324 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
