A human rights lawyer and advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, A. Makitani, based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has condemned Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for accusing Rivers State Governor Similanayi Fubara of violating the rule of law and fueling violence in the state.
In a video obtained by AFRIPOST, Makitani held Wike responsible for the ongoing political unrest and violence in Rivers State, labeling the former governor and current FCT minister “a disgrace to the Nigerian legal profession.”
Makitani also questioned the decision to appoint Wike as a life bencher, challenging the authorities that conferred the prestigious position on him. He expressed doubt over the criteria used in awarding Wike this role within the Nigerian legal system.
The lawyer went further to accuse Wike of ruling like an emperor during his eight-year tenure as governor of Rivers State. He called on the Nigerian body of benchers to take action and strip Wike of his life bencher status.
Makitani stated, “I want to focus on the situation in Rivers State and address my professional colleague, Nyesom Wike, the former governor, and those supporting him.
“I watched an interview where Wike blamed the current governor for not upholding the rule of law, suggesting that this was the root cause of the crisis in Rivers State. After considering everything, I must say that you, Wike, are a huge disgrace to the legal profession.
“Because of this, I have reached the point where I am prepared to publicly burn my wig and gown as a form of protest against what is happening in Nigeria. I now understand why some say that lawyers should be condemned, and it is due to the conduct of lawyers like you, specifically the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike.”
