Rivers Lawmakers Deny Plans to Impeach Governor Fubara

The political tension in Rivers State has deepened following the Supreme Court’s reinstatement of lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The development has led to fresh concerns about a possible impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In response to the speculation, the Chairman of the Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Information, Enemi George, dismissed claims that the lawmakers were plotting to remove the governor.

He explained that impeachment is a legal process that requires a formal motion, an investigation, and proof of wrongdoing before any action can be taken.

According to him, there has been no discussion in the Assembly regarding the governor’s removal.

George also expressed concern over the prolonged political crisis, stating that it has stalled the progress of the state.

He urged all parties involved to set aside personal interests and focus on governance instead of early political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections.

Aside from the political issues, the lawmakers are also dealing with financial difficulties.

George revealed that the Assembly has not received its allowances for over a year and a half, affecting not only the lawmakers but also the institution’s staff and operations.

He said the lack of funds has made it challenging to cover essential expenses such as salaries, diesel purchases, and other administrative costs.
