Rivers Lawmakers Demand EFCC, ICPC Probe of Electoral Commission Boss

The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martins Amaewhule, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Adolphus Enebeli, over alleged financial misappropriation.

During a plenary session held at the Assembly quarters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Amaewhule stated that as the legislative body responsible for enacting the RSIEC law and overseeing its activities, the Assembly had the duty to ensure accountability.

He noted that Enebeli and other commissioners had previously appeared before the House for screening and confirmation, where they pledged to operate within the framework of the constitution and state laws.

However, the speaker lamented that they had since refused to honor the Assembly’s summons.

Given this situation, Amaewhule said it had become necessary to involve anti-corruption agencies to investigate the commission’s financial dealings.

He alleged that public funds had been expended without proper approval, budgetary allocation, or appropriation by the Assembly.

As part of the probe, lawmakers have also summoned RSIEC’s bankers to provide the commission’s financial statements from January 1, 2024, to the present date.
