The political crisis in Rivers State has taken a new dimension as the rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, continues to widen. What should have been a smooth transition of leadership has instead evolved into a protracted power struggle, marked by legislative discord, judicial interventions, and renewed impeachment proceedings. The situation poses a significant threat to governance and stability in the oil-rich state.
Governor Fubara assumed office in 2023 as Wike’s preferred successor, having benefitted from his predecessor’s vast political structure. However, as has been observed in similar political transitions across Nigeria, the relationship between political godfathers and their protégés is often fraught with tension.
Barely months into his tenure, Fubara sought to assert his independence, a move that reportedly strained his relationship with Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The ensuing conflict culminated in an impeachment attempt against the governor in October 2023, spearheaded by a faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Wike. The crisis further escalated when the Assembly complex was set ablaze by yet-to-be-identified individuals, symbolising the deepening divide within the state’s political structure.
The Rivers State House of Assembly remains polarised, with rival factions laying claim to legitimacy. While lawmakers aligned with Wike pursued the impeachment process, Fubara countered by declaring the Assembly defunct and aligning with legislators who remained loyal to his administration. The resulting political realignments led to mass defections, as lawmakers sought to reposition themselves amidst the unfolding crisis.
The instability within the legislature has significantly impacted governance, as both factions focus primarily on political survival rather than the welfare of the state. The conflict has extended beyond the Assembly, with Fubara dismissing key officials perceived to be loyal to Wike and dissolving local government councils dominated by his predecessor’s allies. In response, Wike’s camp has continued to devise strategies to reassert influence over the state’s political affairs.
In a significant development, the House of Assembly on March 17 reignited the impeachment process against Fubara, further intensifying political uncertainty. As reported by Starnews NG, this renewed move underscores the persistence of the power struggle, with neither faction willing to back down.
Amidst the escalating crisis, a recent court judgment further complicated the political landscape. The ruling, which recognised the Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Assembly as the legitimate legislative authority, dealt a substantial blow to Fubara’s administration. The decision reaffirmed the authority of lawmakers aligned with Wike, effectively strengthening their position in the ongoing power struggle.
In an apparent effort to de-escalate tensions, Governor Fubara extended an invitation to the legislators for reconciliation and dialogue. However, the lawmakers declined the invitation, signaling a deep-rooted lack of trust and an unwillingness to engage under the governor’s terms. This refusal further highlights the entrenched political divisions within the state and the challenges in finding a resolution to the crisis.
The unfolding events in Rivers State serve as yet another example of the disruptive influence of political godfatherism in Nigeria’s democratic process. The expectation that an outgoing governor should continue to exert control over state affairs through a successor undermines democratic governance and often leads to political instability.
While godfatherism remains deeply ingrained in Nigeria’s political culture, its consequences are evident in states where power struggles between former and incumbent leaders have resulted in governance paralysis. The people of Rivers State elected Fubara to govern, not to serve as an extension of his predecessor’s administration. A truly democratic system must allow elected leaders to exercise their mandate independently, free from external influence.
To restore normalcy, all parties involved must prioritise the state’s stability over personal and political interests. Wike must acknowledge that his tenure as governor has ended and allow Fubara to administer the state without undue interference. Continued political interference risks deepening the crisis and further destabilising governance in Rivers State.
Similarly, Fubara must exercise restraint and avoid a governance approach driven by retribution. A wholesale removal of Wike’s loyalists from key positions could exacerbate political divisions rather than foster stability. An inclusive leadership approach that prioritises governance over factional conflicts is essential for peace.
It is imperative for neutral stakeholders, including the presidency, traditional rulers, and respected political leaders, to intervene and mediate the crisis before it escalates further. The Rivers State House of Assembly must also be repositioned to function as a legislative institution focused on governance rather than a battleground for political supremacy.
Beyond the immediate crisis, Nigeria must address the broader issue of political godfatherism by strengthening internal democracy within political parties. Leadership should be determined by competence and public trust rather than allegiance to individuals who seek to retain control beyond their tenure in office.
Rivers State is at a critical juncture, and the decisions taken in the coming weeks will determine its political and economic stability. The resurgence of the impeachment process, coupled with the lawmakers’ refusal to engage with the governor, signals a prolonged crisis unless urgent steps are taken to de-escalate tensions.
It is in the interest of all stakeholders to put governance above personal rivalries. Political conflicts should not be allowed to overshadow the developmental needs of the state. Rivers State cannot afford to be consumed by political strife, and the time to prioritise stability and progress is now.
