A tropical cyclone is anticipated to form off the coast of Western Australia, prompting authorities to warn residents to prepare for potentially ‘destructive’ winds.
The Bureau of Meteorology has been monitoring a tropical low near the Pilbara region, predicting it will evolve into a tropical cyclone by 8 AM (AWST) on Sunday.
While the cyclone is not expected to make landfall, officials caution that it will bring ‘destructive wind gusts’ of up to 100 km/h, along with elevated storm tides.
Luke Huntington from the Bureau stated, “Gales will begin early Sunday morning, extending towards Exmouth later in the day and reaching Ningaloo by early Monday.”
In addition, several flood watch warnings have been issued for the area.
“We anticipate rainfall between 50 to 100 millimeters along the Pilbara coastline from Saturday through Monday,” Mr. Huntington added. “The low was located near the south-west Kimberley coast yesterday and has already produced approximately 120 millimeters of rain at Broome Airport in the last 24 hours.”
