The House of Representatives has ordered the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to instruct internet service providers across the country to block all websites that contain pornographic content.
Lawmakers reached this decision on Tuesday after a motion was raised by Dalhatu Tafoki, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Katsina State.
Tafoki argued that cyber pornography had become a growing issue worldwide and that Nigeria had not done enough to tackle it.
He described the country as deeply religious, with major faiths opposing nudity and obscene materials.
He pointed out that several nations in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East had already passed laws banning pornography.
The lawmaker also cited concerns raised by psychologists and sociologists, warning that exposure to pornography could lead to problems such as addiction, prostitution, and infidelity.
According to him, experts have repeatedly spoken about the negative effects of such content on individuals and society.
After deliberation, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas called for a voice vote, and lawmakers agreed with the motion.
As a result, the House directed the NCC to enforce restrictions and penalize any service provider that fails to comply with the directive.
