The House of Representatives has strongly condemned the killing of 16 northern travellers in Uromi, Edo State, calling the act brutal and unacceptable.
The victims were attacked on Friday when a mob set their vehicle on fire.
The House has urged law enforcement agencies to quickly identify, arrest, and prosecute those involved in the crime.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, described the killings as cowardly and a grave violation of human rights.
The House also welcomed the steps taken by President Bola Tinubu and Governor Monday Okpebholo, who directed security agencies to investigate the incident.
While some suspects have been arrested and survivors rescued, the House stressed that justice must be swift and thorough.
Abbas added that such violence contradicts the moral values shared by both Islamic and Christian teachings.
The House called for more collaboration among security agencies, community leaders, and citizens to prevent future occurrences of mob violence.
They also urged religious and traditional leaders to promote tolerance and respect for the law.
Additionally, the House emphasized the need for a national dialogue on mob justice, extrajudicial killings, and ethnic profiling, which are threats to national unity and peace.
They also encouraged civil society and media to support legal awareness and responsible reporting.
The House extended condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding justice and the rule of law.
They stated that mob violence, extrajudicial killings, and ethnic violence have no place in society and vowed to hold perpetrators accountable.
