Reactions as Fani-Kayode Names Only Two African Countries Where Coup Won’t Take Place

Following the wave of military coup de’ tats across the West African sub-region, a former Minister of Aviation and member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Femi Fani-Kayode, has opined that there are only two countries in the sub-region where military takeovers cannot happen. He named these two countries as Nigeria and Ghana.

The primary reason for his assertion, he said, is that the militaries in these two countries are too disciplined and professional to consider engaging in coups.

The former Minister of Tourism further offered five other reasons why he thinks coups are not an option among their militaries.

According to a post via his Twitter (or X) handle, these reasons include:

1. Both countries are Anglophone and not Francophone countries.

2. Both countries have legitimate, accountable democratically-elected governments and term limits for their presidents.

3. Both countries have imbibed the culture of free speech and the rule of law.

4. Both countries have independent and virile judiciaries

5. Both countries have rational, reasonable, and progressive presidents, who are neither stooges or puppets of Western powers nor corrupt sit-tight dictators.

The former minister went on to say that he is proud to be a Nigerian primarily because the country has been able to sustain its democracy for the last 24 years and has made appreciable progress.

He prayed to God to sustain democracy in Nigeria and the country’s newly-elected President.
